Echoes Go Far Back

Identity and home building through the sounds of three UK-based artists.

A musical exploration into the experiences of second and third generation migrants.

This feature documentary explores how music shapes identity and belonging for three UK-based diasporic artists. The film sits in the intersection of migration studies, ethnomusicology and the psychology of creativity.

We follow Ghuraba whose guitar playing is influenced by West African sounds, Rubaya who plays music guided by Sufi traditions, and Robin who blends reggea and hip-hop into sonic collages. Through the time we spent together, we dive into experiences where race, nationality and gender are contested and re-negotiated. The artists allow music to become a means to make sense of it all.
