Community Filmmaking with Napier Friends
The voices coming from Napier Barracks in the midst of anti-immigrant rhetoric.
This was a two session collective filmmaking workshop with men seeking asylum at Napier Barracks in Folkestone. The project was facilitated in partnership with Napier Friends, a local charity supporting people living at the Barracks. We structured the workshop with care-centered and trauma informed practices, with a focus on experimental filmmaking. The participants had an array of cameras at their disposal, as well as microphones to record their thoughts and ideas in their native languages. We had participants from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Syria and Yemen, all with varying levels of English. This was a great opportunity to exercise alternative pedagogical activities to explain complex filmmaking principles.
